The Clinical Study of Carcinoma of the Pancreas



Abstract
We have presented a clinical review of 82 cases of carcinoma of the pancreas among the 501 patients with pancreatic disease admitted to Severance Hospital, Yonsei University during the period from January 1963 to May 1973.
The results were as follows;
1. Of total 82 cases with carcinoma of the pancreas, 55 cases were male and 27 cases female. The ratio between male and female was 2: 1. The peak of age incidence was the 6th decade.
2. The symptoms of carcinoma of the pancreas were abdominal pain in 59.8%, of the patients jaundice 36.6%, abdominal mass 31.7% and weight loss 23.9%. The main clinical findings were abdominal tenderness in 59.8%, jaundice 48.4%, palpable abdominal mass 37.8%, hepa-tomegaly 30. 5%, ascites 4.9% and palpable gall bladder 3.7%.
3. On laboratory tests, anemia showed in 51. 2%, hyperbilirubinemia 47. 6%, elevated alkaline phosphatase 56.1%, hypercholesterolemia 37.8%, hyperglycemia or abnormal glucose tolerance test 33.3% and elevated transaminase 39.0%.
4. The radiologic examination in carcinoma of the pancreas revealed widening duodenal loop in 40. 6%, compression of stomach 33. 3%, colon compression by extrinsic mass 27. 3% and inverted 3 sign 7. 2%.
5. The head portion was involved in 44.1%, body and tail 35.3% and diffuse 20.6% in 34 cases of carcinoma of pancreas which were confirmed by surgery.
6. Among 82 cases of carcinoma of the pancreas 34 cases (41. 5%) had operation including curative resection in 1 case, palliative resection in 17 cases and exploration only in 16 cases.
